The mission

FTP helps PhDs develop the skills and the mindsets to achieve their career goals outside of the academic system.

Universities teach PhDs a lot of things, and these things make PhDs extremely valuable assets across all industries.

However, career development is usually an afterthought in doctoral programs so PhDs who look for employment outside of academia can feel discouraged.

Origins

A photo of David TangA photo of David Tang

I left academia after earning my PhD in 2015 to work as a UX Researcher in the tech industry. This journey would not have been possible without support from strangers, other PhDs who made the same leap and generously gave their time to help.

I did the same for almost a decade before deciding to systematize and scale the advice I was giving. I decided that for me, helping PhDs 1 one at a time is unsustainable and not an efficient use of time, especially after becoming a parent!

I built this company to help way more people without expending way more effort.
